Malapascua Island, Cebu Beach Bumming

Malapascua is known to most of my friends as having the best sunsets in Cebu, on top of its being a good beach destination. They encouraged me to go there and I did, with my cousins. I took pictures of the sunset and they were magnificent. I couldn’t do justice to its beauty by capturing them on a camera, but I still took some nevertheless.
How To Get There
Malapascua island is about a four-hour travel from Cebu City. You would take a bus in the North Bus Terminal near SM bound for Maya which would take around three hours to reach there, and a thirty minute boat ride from Maya port to Malapascua island. Maya is a baranggay of Daanbantayan which is the northern-most tip town of Cebu already.
Where To Stay
As you get off the boat, there will be somebody who will meet you (regardless of whoever you are) and would offer you several options on where to stay on the island. They have good resorts with reasonable prices, and they also have something for people on a budget.
We chose to stay on a kamalig-type room good for two as there were three of us. I forget the name of the place as it was not that good. The bathroom did not have a door and has a tarp as a cover. When you take a dump the smell of your poop will inconveniently hang all over the room. Hahaha. I hear you saying eeww… I wish they have something like the website for Canary Island Holidays so you can choose better, book in advance, and more specially get feedback from the place before getting into some inconveniences like this one.
What To Do
Of course, swimming would be the primary thing to do here, unless you’re a loser and you would bring a laptop and find out that there’s no wifi, and that electricity is only until twelve midnight. Second would be to go around the island on a banca, it may cost around eight hundred pesos for a whole day trip. Ask the boat operator to get you to where the crabs/crustaceans/shrimps are, and you’ll be surprised of their size. It’s like they’ve been given feeds or something and they’re abnormally large. Which is good, good for your hungry tummy.
Goofing up when the sun’s up!
They’ll also get you to where a Japanese warship sank. You can snorkel there and see the ship’s skeleton. Also, you can get to the lighthouse, some dive spots, and adrenaline-pumping jump off cliffs, if you’re that suicidal. I had the idea to do it but it only remained as an idea. I couldn’t bring myself to climb those rocks, much more jump from the top. I learned later that my fellow blogger and workmate Edcel was able to jump on that same cliff shown here.
If you want to skim, there were only a few locals who rent skimboards so you better bring one yourself. And the waves are not that great, so just do some flat-skimming.
A friend of mine asked, which is better, Bantayan or Malapascua? I said I really can’t choose, both are good places to unwind. I like Malapascua because of its remoteness and homeliness, whereas Bantayan is more of the fun with friends. Did I make sense? Hahaha…

The sunset pictures are beautiful. It seems like the colors are different from what we usually see.. both the blue and the orange are so vivid.

Sounds like you had a good time! Next time you come, look me up and I’ll show what Malapascua REALLY has to offer – underwater! The Island may be a gem, but it’s a pearl underwater, let me tell you! =)
