Reports lately are saying that Hong Kong is issuing travel advisories for their nationals against traveling to the Philippines. This was right after the hostage-drama that resulted to the death of 7(?) of their citizens. They felt that the Philippine government, specially the National Police did not handle the crisis efficiently and effectively. Well that is an understatement if you look at the fact that the victims died as a result.
Will other countries follow suit in advising their citizens that Philippines is a dangerous place to travel? There are already travel advisories by the US government and other countries against their citizens in traveling in some parts of the Philippines especially in the Muslim Mindanao area.
In that case, that may affect our tourism industry. Not that we rely solely on our tourism sector, but it has contributed to local business booms and other lucrative income-generating schemes by our fellow Filipinos. Ther are already hundreds of businesses that thrive on tourism: from the habal-habal to V-hires to individuals selling souvenirs, food, delicacies (like letchon) to tourists, to the major players like the resorts and airlines.
If their source of income will be cut off, we sink more and more into this quagmire of destitution. Their businesses would experience bad losses, if not total shut down. Where will these people go? They won’t just disappear; rather they add to the statistics of people either unemployed or living in poverty.
We should prevent this type of incident that has political and international ramifications from happening. Or firstly, we should identify such circumstances detrimental to us as a nation-state. We wouldn’t know if China will hold this grudge and we can’t negotiate with the Spratly’s Island territory issue anymore, among other favors we might be needing from them.
That is a lesson to learn in a political perspective.

Hong Kong Travel Advisory Against Philippines | Lakbay Philippines…
I found your entry interesting do I’ve added a Trackback to it on my weblog

[...] Hong Kong Travel Advisory Against Philippines | Lakbay Philippines [...]
Amen.
I think it’s an eye opener for us. Not only in showing us that if you happen to get hostaged by a lone gunman, you’re better off fighting him than relying on the negotiating team and the SWAT (Sobrang Wala Akong Training)
but also is showing us what we stand to lose should we not address certain security problems that has been discouraging tourists for over a decade now.
Now if we want to bite back at HK and China, then I say we should return all the counterfeit stuff they’ve been peddling at Divisoria, Greenhills and all those other counterfeit outlets.

We really can’t blame H.K. or China issuing those travel advisory. If the incident happened the other way around, we might have done and felt the same way.
I think it’s high time then that PNoy find a way if not to totally solve the impending tourism problem, to at least alleviate its impact to our economy.
Well, you/we can help out. From your blog title pa lang “lakbaydiva”. We can still promote tourism in our own little way^^
