Getting Bored During Long Bus Trips

Riding a BusSometimes, I get to travel on a bus for long trips like from Sorsogon to Manila  which if memory serves me right took about twelve hours; Cebu to Bacolod via Toledo-San Carlos for about 7 hours, and Cagayan de Oro to Davao via Buda.

In Sorsogon-Manila, there could have been a nice scenery to look at as it’s the countryside, but unfortunately at that time it was night. All I could see out from the window was pitch black. I was left shuddering as the aircon of the bus was really set to very cold, and I had two shirts on with a jacket over it, a bonnet to cover my head, and thick socks.

From Cebu to Bacolod, I was with a good friend of mine so it wasn’t boring. But sometimes you get very sleepy but then the roads are bumpety so you can’t sleep at all. Worse, the bags keeps on falling on top of your heads because a.) the driver can’t wait to die, and b.) the place where they put our bags overhead has a small space and very much packed, so every deathly swirve of the driver makes some of those bags fall off.

My lone cross Mindanao trip which culminated in crossing Bukidnon from Cagayan de Oro to Davao was the easiest 7 hour ride so far, as the view of Bukidnon with it’s pineapple plantations was breath taking. Also, there was this excitement and adrenaline rush as to what’s going to happens next, as there were checkpoints at that time due to the conflict of the MILF and the national government about the MOA-AD. There was a bus terminal and a market that got bombed, and a v-hire stopped and male passengers pushed over a cliff while being shot at.

During these times your best friend is your mp3 player or your ipod. I’m not a die-hard fan of many bands or artists, so I don’t download by albums. I sometimes use torrents to download the songs that just pop in my head.

I bought a 4GB ipod and haven’t filled it yet, because I’m contented with downloading Trance, House, and Techno music which you don’t get tired of. Why don’t I get tired of it? Simply because it doesn’t have lyrics and you’ll get bored once you’ve memorized the lyrics and kept on singing it. Lol.

It was a not so eventful day for the rest of the world, as it was still dark when we boarded the plane from Cebu to Cagayan de Oro. But for us, it was a beginning of an exciting and adrenaline-pumping escapade.

PA230441 When we arrived there, we waited in the airport terminal gate for our bus to pick us up en route to the starting point.

It was somewhat cloudy but you could see some rays of the sun seeping through the clouds.

We had some briefing first, what we need to know in case something happens. But most importantly, Dodoy our rafting guide said, Enjoy!

Kagay! The company we hired to experience this shout-and-shriek evoking adventure. The run was about 3 hours, and my friends who were mostly ladies had a screaming adventure of their lifetime.

Above is the documentation of how we managed to steer ourselves to the path of doom… But I’m suspicious it was the doing of our guides. Anyway, there was a person at the keeling side of the SOTAR (State Of The Art Raft) who was thrown off, and it happened to be me. Why, oh why me?

My buddy tried to save me by thrusting his paddle but no use, the current swept me away. Good thing I have advanced training in using the lifejacket, I just floated away, and did what the guides told us in case it would happen.

Anyway, it wasn’t a big deal. The river was safe and nobody was ever reported to have drowned there.

It was a REAL experience, a TV-like adventure which you could only dream about. I was there, and experienced the rapids first-hand. Those rapids I could describe as the raging waters inside a washing machine, amplified thousands of times over.
