Oble
Every single UP campus I’ve been to has its own version of Oble. It has been the symbol of the University of the Philippines for academic freedom; bare naked body with open arms – signifying the humbleness to receive knowledge in its entirety.
This visit to UP Miagao was long overdue. I’ve been planning for over five years until its fruition. As a student of UP Cebu, I’ve been eyeing all the UP Visayas campuses for a visit. 
School of Fisheries
Diwata ng Dagat
UP Miagao, being the national center of excellence for fisheries and aquatic sciences, has the Diwata ng Dagat as their major landmark. The diwata, standing on fish, is shown as a strong woman pulling a fishnet. It represents the drive to excel in mastering “sustainable stewardship of God-given resources” such as the seas and the oceans. Also, it breaks the stereotype that only men can be “fishermen”.
mysterious bridge
On our way to the beach of UP Miagao (yes they’re lucky enough to have a beach of their own!), we passed by this bridge. My friend Julie who was a student there told us this bridge is spooked. There are nights when people can hear the sound of a ship passing by this bridge. They would hear the sound of a ship as if it was approaching, and then sounds it horn. However, they don’t see anything.

When we went there, some students were swimming. They didn’t have classes as it was semestral break (that’s why I get to travel too!). Lucky them, their campus has a beach – great place to de-stress and unwind from the pressures of academics!
I have a preference for this campus. The atmosphere is so laid-back and provincial; you get to be pensive and reflective here.
