I bought an Olympus Digital underwater camera (µTough-3000). A little bit expensive for my budget but I guess this is an investment. It cost me more than a quarter of my salary for a month, and I paid it with a friend’s credit card.
Having a travel blog would require you to have a camera. Else, you would not be able to capture pictures you have been to, as well as post those memories! Come to think of it, I would be grabbing pictures here and there from all over the internet, risking copyright infringement. Not to mention that it may not be available.
Let me talk about the specs.
It has a 12 megapixel resolution for best qualities in photo printing. However, I am not an artist or photographer that blows up images for exhibit so I think this 12 MP is an overkill. It would be okay if it were at 6 or 8 MP, that way the price could have been reduced.
The zoom is only at 3.6x, one of the features I am not quite happy with. Unlike those cameras that has lens that extends from the camera to get a closer look at far objects, this µTough-3000 lens are in-house – protected in its casing. It was made that way so that the lens will be protected from conditions it will be subjected to, thus limiting its optical zoom capabilities.
Being true to its name Tough, it boasts to be waterproof up to 3 meters, shockproof up to 1.5 meters, and freeze-proof –10 degrees Celsius. I tried this underwater but it was murky so it could not capture objects a meter from it. I have not tried it again so I am looking forward for its performance next time. I have not dropped this and have no plans in testing out its shockproof-ness. I have not also tried its freeze-proof capability since we do not have snows or glaciers here in the Philippines. Hmmm I just realized there are freezers though.
My most favorite feature is its one-touch button capturing of HD video in 720p. The captured videos are very sharp and clear. Motions are captured unlike most digital cameras where it would show a blur.
All in all, this compact camera is best for me when I travel – it is lightweight, can be brought anywhere I go as in literally everywhere, and is tough!

Nice, a very good investment indeed. We’re thinking to get a waterproof point and shoot too, the Sony TX5 is the best option we’ve identified so far.

I’ve been craving for the Tough 8000. I don’t know if which one is the latest but I really liked the Tough 8000. More power to you and your camera. Will be waiting for some underwater adventure with your Tough!

@vera Sony TX5 has a bigger preview screen. they have about the same price with Olympus.
@maniniyot i think una ang Tough 3000, kay tulo man na ka tough series siguro. ang 8000 ang pinaka mahal. hehehe
I think it’s a smart investment for your blog and beyond. It’s really a new age joy to be able to capture the places you’ve been to and the sights you’ve seen. With that in mind I probably should invest in a state-of-the-art Spy Camera, preferably one that can pass off as some deformation at the tip of my shoes
Going back to your post however
, I think the Olympus’ easy to use functions makes it an ideal camera-on-the-go. And yes, it’s video capabilities makes perfect sense. … Now find one that will pass off as a deformation at the tip of your shoes and you’re IN.

Oh I see. 8000 diay ang pinakamahal?
Nalingaw ko atong ako siyang gi-test dati sa Megamall. Bagong labas ang 8000 ato. I literally stepped on it. Tapos nice ang optical zoom and also the “Beauty” feature.
Murag integrated photoshop sa 8000.

Nice camera! I’m thinking of investing on a waterproof camera as well.
I was so worried my camera would fall into the water when I went mangrove planting a while back. It’s always nicer when you can appreciate nature and engage in activities with peace of mind.
